Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Those Brewer's Hardware tri-clover adapters do look pretty cool. I'm not planning on having any welding done on the SS kettles, though, so I'm going to be looking at weldless fittings. I couldn't find one on their site, am I just blind? I liked the one I saw somewhere that adapted a sugar shaker lik...

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Thanks for the further thoughts. I've read quite a bit on the difference in thermal transfer characteristics between copper and 304 stainless. The significantly thinner wall of the stainless is commonly thought to help offset the difference to some degree, though it can never match copper of course....

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Thanks for the quick answer! I'm planning to have a 1/2" pickup tube to collect the water pretty close to the bottom of the kettle, and run it continuously through one of the pumps wide open back to an inlet at the top with a short tube angled to one side for just the reason you describe. Shoul...

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Ooops - still not BCS related pictures yet, but ended up snagging 2 of these 9kW 240V stainless heating elements for $25 each... Is there some guidance to how much distance has to be below an element in the kettles? Not as critical in the boil kettle, but I'd like to slam the HLT element as close to...

Re: Reading two temp probes
For what it's worth, I haven't even finished building my system yet, but have read through almost everything in the forum. I'm excited to get up and running later this year as funding allows .

Re: Reading two temp probes
What benefit would this provide over just measuring the MLT and firing the HLT element if it's not at desired temp? Presumably in the described scenario you're using a HERMS system, so stratification of both your mash and HLT is going to be reduced by the circulation, right? Am I completely misunder...

Re: New Member Intro
I'm coming from a non-automated system, and simultaneously upgrading from 10 gallon to 25 gallon kettles. My design thread is here in general discussion as well, and I'm also taking some design cues from the electric brewery site.

Re: New Member Intro
I'm in the planning stages of my upgraded build too, and want the physical overrides for the same reason you do. Again, I might not need them, but I like the idea of having a physical switch that I can flip just in case.

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Broph - thanks for the heads up, I'll have to check that out and see if it adds to my ideas. bcrawfo2 - I'm setting it up to be able to have 2 elements on each of the HLT and boil kettle, so I'm already planning 50A and expecting to select one kettle at a time. I drink copious quantities of this liq...

Re: Email on Alarm
What if you were to code it so that if a user wants to enable e-mail alerts, they have to provide an account to send from. Usually your own ISP will allow you to use their outgoing server for your personal use as long as you have an account. The end user would then have to set up on the e-mail alert...
