Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Hey everyone! I've been pretty silent all year thanks to a ridiculously stressful move. After a home inspection, plus the VA's required home inspection our house got signed off for the loan and we moved in. Went to make some cosmetic tweaks and discovered a rotten subfloor in one room, studs that wo...

Re: Test Drive a BCS-460
It hasn't worked for me since December. I keep trying to hit the site to fiddle around and see if the BCS is the product for my brewing needs.

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Yeah, the specs on those boards seem pretty reasonable, and several of the regular contributors here have spoken highly of stuff from that vendor. I like the price of the 4 channel a lot better, but need that fifth relay for the way I want to set it up... Never hurts to have extras floating around f...

Re: Ground Loop Article
From what I understand of what gets posted over and over, the ground between the BCS and the box SHOULD be connected to minimize reading fluctuations. There doesn't seem to be any "best practice" when you put the BCS in a separate enclosure, however. The question I had was relating to the ...

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Good catches, BD. I wasn't thinking clearly when I thought, "Hey I can throw the Power indication in here and simplify the wiring..." uh, not so much. The key and E-Stop are on the same circuit for different reasons. The key switch is to prevent my kiddos from firing up the brew rig withou...

Re: Ground Loop Article
Good article - thanks for sharing. The note on twisted pair got me to thinking, do we lose the benefit of using twisted pair if we use a setup as suggested on the wiki? One CAT5 cable with a single ground and 7 signals, for instance. I'm guessing the electromagnetic interference cancellation is less...

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
That's basically what my backup is when you flip the switches to manual mode. Except instead of building a second box with another copy of all the expensive bits (SSR's, 63A disconnects, etc), I'm just planning to have a 3 way switch and a PWM with a knob that live in the same box.

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Here's how the plugs will fit on a 16"x12"x8" enclosure. Definitely the minimum size to go with when using these enormous power connectors!

Re: Pre-planning stages of BCS based homebrewery
Ok, JonW - you're right. Extra physical PID's is crazy. I do like the idea of having something as a backup, though. I also like the idea of all the switching being done on the 5V side, so it occurred to me to use a 5V PWM "motor controller" that has a variable duty cycle as my backup. WAY ...

Re: Element Switching Relays
BD - I believe that is inline with what is being discussed, with one little sidebar about the ladder logic option. Most of the posts, including the original and related answer, pertain to a physical relay switching between two circuits. I believe we've digressed to discussing methods of switching th...
