Connectivity issues... arghh!!

Post by cyberbackpacker »

I am just trying to get the BCS setup right now to run a single outlet so I can get my fermentation fridge running here today.

That said, I just plugged in the BCS, the screen loaded, but in where the thermometer "gauges" are there was an "Error" message. It had a button to see "details". It is all greek to me. Here is what the error details said:

So, not knowing anything, I just disconnected the BCS from my laptop. Then I looked at the wiki, and checked my TCP/IP settings, and I did have to change the IP address and the subnet too.

Did that and reconnected the BCS to the laptop. Tried to connect again and it would not load. It said it had "timed out".

HELP!!!

Was this the first time that you've seen the java error? Have the gauges worked in the past? Basically, what's happening is that the temperature gauges run on a java applet, and the java plugin that runs in your browser is complaining about something. If you've upgraded your browser recently, you may need to also upgrade your JRE . And sometimes it just takes a reload, or restart. Java applets have a tendency not to play nice with browsers all of the time, which is exactly why we're getting rid of the gauges java applet in v2.0 of the firmware coming soon.

Now for the connectivity issues.... The problem above had nothing to do with connectivity. You were able to connect to the BCS perfectly, your browser was just having issues with the applet. I think by updating your network settings you inadvertently busted the network.

So, put them back to the way they were before. You might have to reboot your PC in order for them to take effect. If that doesn't do the trick, then we need some more information. Are you connecting directly to the BCS or is it networked (attached to a router)?

I've also updated this troubleshooting page, which may help:

Thanks again for the quick reply...

First, for now, the BCS is connected directly to my PC, and not through a router.

This was actually only the second time I had ever plugged-in/turned on the BCS unit (the other time was to test the two probes I had to determine which was the faulty probe).

So I was nervous, and yes that was the first that I had seen an error message.

That said, I updated java on my computer (just in case), and shut down the computer and did a restart.

I then followed the troubleshooting advice, and hooked up the ethernet cable between the PC and the BCS, and then I plugged in the power cord. I got the orange light and the green flash.

Opened the BCS web-browser and it worked!

So thank you... I guess it was just a java quirk.

Now to try my hand at "process control" for the first time to get my ferm chamber going!

Thanks again.

Using the system example with MLT/Ferm Control I was able to program the BCS yesterday for my fermentation fridge.

It has been running nicely now with a 65F setpoint... when I hit "run process" and the fridge started running I must admit I got a little giddy!

Nevertheless, I have an Irish Red in the chamber fermenting away nicely for the past 12 hours! My first fully temp controlled ferment and I look forward to many more, and much more use of the BCS!

Thanks again ECC!
