BCS power?

Post by bad coffee »

Is the PS supplied with the BCS a simple wall-wart? 9v >.7A?

I'm looking for a PS I can mount in the box with the BCS, if possible. Once I know the specs of the one that comes with it, I can figure out which one to put in the box.

Cheers,
BC

Looking ahead at building my BCS box, I found an old Airport Express that needs a new power supply. Since I wanted to make the thing wireless, I figured why not just tear open the AE and see what kind of power supply it needs. Of course I'm not the first person to open one, so I hit the web: This webpage, shows me everything I need!

Since I'm installing a ps for the AE, I figure why not just get one that will power the BCS as well! Right now I'm looking at a 12v for the transfomer because there's more options available. I'd love to find a 9v one that will work, so I don't need to add yet another current limit setup. (Why produce the extra voltage and then knock it down? know-what-I-mean?) But for cost/time I might just go with the 12.

So far here's the shopping list. Next month when I have some free time I should be able to start building. Yes, there will be pics taken!

3.3 1300ma voltage reg:

Heat sinks for TO-220 regs.

100uf cap

.1 uf ceramic cap

Fuse (1a 5x20mm)

General layout:
AC in to the box. Transformer mounted to box, leads go to project board. I haven't decided whether to run the power as separate legs off the transformer or split it out after the rectifier. Any suggestions?

On the project board. fuse -> voltage reg (with caps) -> device. The AE will be mounted on the board, and there will be a tail off for the BCS power.

Option 2:
Mount an edison outlet in the box and plug the BCS wall wart and the working AE I have into it. Quick and dirty and less work.

Suggestions? Comments? Ideas?

Cheers,
Brett

My BCS 462 shipped with a 6v 1A psu, so that's what's going in the box. 6vdc ~2A

Probably something like this, (which negates the 9v regulator.)

I found this on ebay, 5v/3.3v transformer. Looks like the best option for the Airport Express. $15 shipped.

Bottom center of this picture you can see what I ended up doing with the wall wort.
It is a simple 2 wire receptacle zip tied to a DIN mount. Not what I was originally looking for but VERY simple.
