In wiring up the SSRs, I think I may have gotten a couple of bad ones -- however, two bad SSRs at the same time seems fishy, so it may just be how I've got them wired. As a test I've wired up:
Receptacle hot to SSR post 1
SSR post 2 to an LED (pilot light post 1)
Pilot light post 2 to receptacle common
NO CONTROL CURRENT IS CONNECTED
This should result in no illumination to the pilot light since there is no control current, correct? However, once power is supplied to the receptacle, the pilot light illuminates. Seems pretty simple to me, but maybe I'm missing something. Any thoughts are appreciated.

When there is no input signal and no load on an SSR you will see the line voltage on the output. As soon as you plug in a heating element or puno you should see the voltage drop to zero. I use neon lamps as pilot lights and they all light up when there is no other load on the outlet. As soon as something even as small as a 5 watt night light will cause the pilot lamp to go out until the control voltage is supplied to the SSR.
