Remote 7 seg display?

Post by ddorsett »

Wondering if it'd be possible to drive a 7 seg display mounted remotely- I'm building out a remote temp controller connected to BCS via cat 5 (temp probe and heat/cool relay signals) and wondering if EXP0/EXP1 for the 7 segment display could also be run thorugh the CAT5 to display current/set temp nearer to the refrigerators... thoughts?

What is your distance? The I2C bus can be extended with buffer drivers if it is a significant distance.

Going to be about 25ft from controller to remote box install.

The I2C bus is typically not meant for long distances. Ideally less than 24".

Hm. So where do I go to find out more about a buffer driver to extend an I2C cable?

I know this thread is several years old, but I'm just now discovering the BCS products, and digging through the forums finding ideas. Yours made a couple light bulbs go off, so I went to google. There's a pre-made product for this as of Nov 2014, though you could also DIY from the controller chips if you prefer:
http://sandboxelectronics.com/?product= ... 715-module - only $17.95.
