DIY Glycol Chiller Wiring Help

Post by oakbarn »

I have torn apart a free Window AC unit. I have removed the fan and motor and disconnected the fan motor wiring (molex connector)

It had a wiring Diagram on top of the electronics which are still intact.

I was thinking that all I need to do was "short" two relays.

I plan on using an Out from the BCS to control the On/Off under PWM Control

Is it that simple?

For most of them, you don't have to modify any wiring. Since the thermistor is in ambient air and you are chilling glycol, the AC unit will never shut off since it never hits its set temp. Simply using an external relay that powers it on/off like you do a ferm chamber or kegerator is sufficient.

I was planningto put this in an unconditioned area. I guess it would be better in a controlled enviroment which I have as it really does not generate heat. I have a 12 x 13 "Cold Room" where I can control the temp to 50 and above via a cool bot (at least in the winter). I plan to keep the room at 67 and have the Glycol chiller for lagers. I can put the Chiiler in the room and the internal thermostat will call for 60, which it will never reach as the temp bulb will be in the air (67). The Glycol Bath will be controlled by my Femermentation BCS. Guess I am done with the wiring. Now to plumbing. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the Unit I have remains off once power is removed. Basically it loses it Temp Setting and does not power back up. You have to click the power button and reset the temp. Also I might have my room cooler than the 60 degree minimum on the UNit. So I have to figure out how to turn on the compressor with an SSR controlled by the BCS.

I have got just about everything done except the BCS and associated 110 vac wiring done.

All I had to do was cut the Blue wire on the RY-Comp relay and connect to the other leg of the AC power in. This bypasses all the other circuits and the power switch (which was electronic). It simply turns on the compressor. So I had to only make one wire connection. I removed all of the motor control as I do not need them. It is now PWM controlled by the BCS.

Now I just need to get the BCS and SSRs installed. :D
