Using wireless access point??

Post by missing_link »

I just ordered a wireless access point to use with the BCS.

I have a working knowledge of wireless networks and stuff but I am no expert.

Is it difficult to get your home wireless network to see the BCS this way?

The one part of brewing with the BCS over the weekend I did not like was having my laptop near the brewing operation. I used a 15ft Cable but then it is just another trip hazzard.

well....

To do this, you'll need to connect the BCS to the wireless router and the router most support bridging. The easiest way is to flash an older Linksys WRT54G with third-party firmware that supports bridging, something like dd-wrt.

It's possible, but it can be tricky to get working, especially with the new model routers.

The unit I ordered can be a bridge, access point, or router. I guess I'll have some fun getting this thing set up

start by doing a bridge, the bcs needs to still get it's ip address from the primary router in the house, or normal network rules will prevent you from seeing it through the new device. If the device is a bridge it just is a media shift from wired ethernet to wireless, your primary router will still give it it's ip address and all the issues around firewalls/nat'ing and all that will not bother you. Just keep saying to yourself: Bridge, Bridge, Bridge...Anything else will be a bit more work...

I have a wireless network now and wireless printserver. This week I'll be adding the wireless access point for the BCS and a wireless media center for listening to music.

I need to hire me a computer wizz to come to my house!!

In theory, that one should do what you want. Let us know how it works out.

Good luck!

I have had good success with http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=346 - it works like a champ and has a VERY small foot print.

I already received mine in the mail though I have not had time to mess with it yet. Maybe this weekend.
